Specialist technical principles
In addition to the core technical principles, all students should develop an in-depth knowledge and understanding of the following specialist technical principles:
Designing and making principles
Students will be taught that all design and technology activities take place within a wide range of contexts.
They should also understand how the prototypes they develop must satisfy wants or needs and be fit for their intended use. For example, the home, school, work or leisure.
They will need to demonstrate and apply knowledge and understanding of designing and making principles
This second year of the two year course is dominated by the controlled assessment
The majority of time will be spent designing and making the controlled assessment under informal supervision.(Work for the Controlled Assessment and theory paper)

Groups and Assessment
Students are taught in mixed ability groups.
Controlled assessment takes place during the year and work is assessed continually with feedback on how to improve. Written examinations in June (year 10) and December (year 11). Ongoing class based testing.
There are no tiers in this GCSE course, all students take the same final exams.
Controlled Assessment and Final Examinations
Controlled assessment takes place in both years 10 and 11 and counts for 60% (50% for 2019 exam) of the final grade.
Paper 1 - There is one final examination at the end of year 11, this counts for 40% (50% for 2019 exam) of the final grade.
Duration: 2 hours
All questions are compulsory and range from very short, to extended answer questions. There is a design question which the candidates are given the theme one month before for research and preparation.
