General Information on Heathside School for Job Applicants

Heathside School is a larger than average, mixed, Foundation, comprehensive school. The school became a Specialist Technology College in 1995, opened a Sixth Form in 1996, and became affiliated with the Diocese of Guildford in 1999. From September 2009 the school has had Modern Foreign Languages as its second specialism.

There are currently 1,299 students on roll including 248 students in the sixth form. Curriculum provision is enhanced through vocational courses run jointly with other schools, colleges and training providers within the Elmbridge 14-19 Consortium.

Ofsted carried out a full inspection of the school in June 2011 and categorised both the main school and the Sixth Form as Outstanding. The full report may be accessed via the school’s or Ofsted’s website.

Heathside has an established trend of very strong examination results at both GCSE and Advanced level. In 2012 the average points score per student in KS5 was 347 UCAS points with 63% of grades being at A*, A or B standard. 88% of our Year 11 students gained 5 or more A*-C passes with 75% gaining this benchmark including English and Maths. Over 47% of our students met the EBacc criteria and this reflects the importance of a high challenge curriculum within the school.

Heathside is extremely popular and is regularly oversubscribed. Whilst around 70% of the new Year 7 intake comes two main feeder schools, students join form a total of approximately 25 other schools in the local area.

Our school is respected in the community, participating, planning and organising a full programme of school, inter-school, community and national activities, visits, festivals and competitions in sport, the arts, music, community safety as well as technological initiatives. A significant proportion of this outreach work is driven and enabled by the school’s Specialist Status (Technology, and Modern Foreign Languages).

The school is affiliated with the Diocese of Guildford and this reflects our values and ethos that are broadly Christian in character. The school has an inclusive stance towards all faiths and religions and its affiliation with the Diocese has no bearing on student admissions or staff recruitment.

Heathside is an active member of the Elmbridge 14-19 Consortium that focuses on expanding vocational opportunities and pathways for students. In addition, the school joins with local primary, secondary and infant schools within the Bridge Partnership. This is designed to enable the delivery, in the Borough of Elmbridge, of the ‘Every Child Matters’ agenda within the extended schools initiative.

As a result of working closely with our community, the priorities that parents and students expect from our high performing school are very clear;

  • Provision of high quality learning opportunities within a supportive and encouraging environment where teaching is of a very high standard.
  • Provision of rich opportunities for involvement in extra-curricular clubs, visits, sports and the arts.
  • An emphasis on business and community links, providing many practical opportunities both within and beyond the curriculum.
  • A caring and strong pastoral structure that supports all students in striving to achieve their potential.
