Heathside School caters for the range of educational needs of all its students. The Learning Support Department at Heathside co-ordinates provision for students with additional needs and special educational needs and disabilities.
The Learning support department works with all members of school staff to actively progress the development of students with Special Educational and additional needs. The department aims to promote learning strategies and teaching approaches which allow these needs to be met. Support is given to teachers to enable them to provide appropriate challenges and opportunities for success for identified students. In addition, emphasis is given to help the students recognise and plan for their own progress.
The documents below outline the ethos of Quality First teaching provided for all students. In addition, it describes how needs are met using the Graduated response model of provision used to support our students with additional needs. The provision map show the range of possible additional interventions available at Heathside School to support your child.
Information on the SEND Departments Literacy Programme can be found in the documents below.
The SNIP Literacy Programme is uploaded here for use by students and parents as an additional support to interventions offered in school. The programme is in four parts and worksheets should be printed off and completed in order.
The programme is aimed at increasing reading and spelling and uses the primary high frequency words (HFW). These words are grouped by selecting those that visually look different to each other. It is felt that this programme is appropriate for students with standardised literacy scores of 80 or less, who have already been exposed to effective phonic/literacy teaching but are still struggling. The programme approaches literacy acquisition at the word level and addresses the gaps in phonics knowledge through the application of analytic phonics (drawing pupils’ attention to the makeup of words as they break up the target word).
